Bedding modulus calculation

Get total control over your surface supports. Simulate a more realistic response with variable stiffness distribution along the surface support or foundations. Calculate the bedding modulus automatically by defining a soil underneath.

 

RC bar fire design

In addition to steel and timber bar fire design, reinforced concrete bars can now be designed for fire in FEM-Design 20. For concrete bars, the approach of the standard is to verify that, at the end of the fire duration, the damaged bar still has enough load-bearing capacity, considering the reduction in the cross-section dimensions and material parameters.

 

Stiffness modifiers

Save time on your high-rise (and not only) structure calculations by replacing a time-consuming cracked-section analysis with direct stiffness matrix reductions. A so-called stiffness reduction factor has been implemented in FEM-Design 20, which therefore provides a more realistic rigidity distribution in linear calculations and faster results of displacement and internal force calculations.

 

Separate stiffness definition

You can now get different stiffnesses for different limit states, and customize the rigidity of supports, foundation elements, connections and other structural objects. Besides stiffnesses, the plastic limits can also be calculation-type-dependent.

 

Masonry Design

A completely new design module, Masonry Design, is implemented in FEM-Design 20. Brick material definition is available for Plane wall objects only and the effect of the mortar on design can be considered in 2 ways: masonry unit brick only or masonry brick + mortar.

The Masonry design calculation is carried out by Wall stripes. The stripe-division is performed automatically based on the stripe width parameter under the Configure masonry design menu. The Masonry Wall design results provide internal forces by stripe and utilization, with detailed result is available by walls.

 

Composite Column Design

In FEM-Design 20, composite columns can be checked according to the Eurocode so-called "Simplified method" from Eurocode 4 (EN 1994-1-1 6.7.3), where the cross-sections and reinforcement are designed based on theoretical interaction surface. To run a composite design, the column, should be modelled with one of the cross-sections in the Composite tab.

 

Parametric model

The Parametric Model tool has been improved in FEM-Design 20, and can now be used for building up parametric structural frame-, shell- or complex-systems. Quickly enter and modify typical structures with the Parametric model. Streamline your projects and workflow with the latest version of the Parametric model.

 

Time History Analysis

You now have 3 different methods to run the so-called linear time history analysis (LTHA) in FEM-Design 20. A completely new analysis type has been developed and you can calculate the dynamic load and response from forced vibrations or from ground acceleration. You can define ground acceleration functions of time in horizontal and vertical direction with the Ground acceleration command in the Loads tab.

You can perform a level spectra analysis by taking into account any equipment on any of the stories and calculate an average acceleration vector storey by storey. You can define specific force multiplier functions of time, by using the Excitation force command in the Loads tab, and by defining excitation force diagrams.

 

IFC

Model exchange has never been easier with the latest updates in IFC import. Use your 3D geometrical representations defined by architectural and structural modelers as input for analysis in FEM-Design.

FEM-Design can read IFC models and create native and editable FEM-Design analytical model elements from the following types of structural building elements: IfcColumn, IfcBeam, IfcSlab and IfcWall. Other IFC types of IFC Building Elements (for example IfcStair, IfcFooting, IfcCurtainWall, IfcPile), or IFC Distribution Elements (MEP equipment), or IFC Furnishing Elements can be displayed as reference elements only in the model space.

 

Adjust Analytical Mode

Save time on adjusting your analytical model for a correct calculation. Use the new tools to connect structural elements to each other or to a grid. The adjustment functions are available in the Structure tab under the Adjust analytical model command.

For each adjustment operation we need to select two groups of elements: The reference objects, called "master objects", to which we want to adjust analytical members, and the analytical members to be adjusted (called "objects to adjust" or target objects) Reference objects can be Storeys, Axes or analytical members.

There are 2 modules available for geotechnical calculations: Foundation Design and 3D Soil that can work together or individually.

  • Foundation Design makes the EC7 code check of the foundation load carrying capacity.
  • 3D Soil calculates the interaction between the soil properties and the structure.

The Foundation Design Module is the perfect addition to your FEM-Design 3D Structure program if you want to add geotechnical checks directly to your documentation report. 

Isolated and wall foundations

Automatic checks for:

  • Soil bearing
  • Soil sliding
  • Settlement utilization
  • Insulation check'

 

Beam foundations with concrete slab

You can define typical beam foundations under a concrete slab. There are 2 ways you can do this:     

  • You can have the concrete slab interact with the soil and transfer loads directly, or you can assume that the slab is only distributing the loads to the beams, which are the only ones that interact with the soil. In this example, we are analyzing the latter, where the beams are the ones that transfer the loads to the soil.

2. 3D Soil

Building stresses are usually analyzed in detail, while the foundation is modelled with springs to simulate the underlying soil deformation. These springs - which are often assumed to have the same characteristics over the entire foundation, does not give a true picture of how the soil reacts to the loads. 

Benefits of FEM-Design 3D Soil

  • The deformation and settlement profile will be much more accurate and - which is more important - the internal forces of the superstructure will be also more realistic according to the soil structure interaction (e.g. it is more relevant when we would like to calculate the internal forces in a foundation slab).
  • The nonlinear effects of the soil structure interaction can be followed with different nonlinear soil material models (e.g. Mohr-Coulomb plasticity) which give more accurate results.
  • The different soil layers can be defined to create a 3-dimensional soil volume, which is analyzed simultaneously with the overlying structure.
  • Models soil with 3D finite element and becomes a construction material like concrete, steel, wood or other materials. The analysis combines these materials in a single calculation. This gives a much more accurate view of soil deformation.

FEM-Design comes with an application programming interface (API) that can be used for parametric design and task automation. The API for FEM-Design is based on the extensible markup language (XML) and allows FEM-Design users to communicate and command FEM-Design.

FEM-Design geometry models and commands can be generated using any programming language capable of creating and modifying XML files. Furthermore, we provide ready to use toolboxes for Dynamo and Grasshopper. These toolboxes are released as open-source to allow our users to modify them as they please.

1. StruSoft StruXML Revit Add-In

StruSoft offers a free tool that enables direct communication between FEM-Design and Autodesk Revit Structure. StruSoft StruXML Revit Add-In enables two-directional communication between Revit and FEM-Design. It is powerful, but at the same time easy to use, a tool that transfers the analytical model along with its properties between the two programs.

Characteristics

The transfer of structural elements from Revit to FEM-Design is done by exporting an analytical model of an instance of an element along with its properties. If a structural element in Revit does not have an analytical model enabled, it can not be exported to FEM-Design.

2. Tekla Tools

StruSoft offers a set of free tools that enable direct communication between FEM-Design and Tekla Structures. The two independent tools exchange data through an external file in xml format, called struxml. Both tools can be found in Download tab.

⤷ Tekla StruXML Export

Tekla StruXML Export tool enables direct communication between Tekla and FEM-Design. The direct data transfer is solely based on Tekla Analysis Model export. The exact geometry of the selected analysis model can be exported to an external file in xml format (struxml), which can be opened in FEM-Design. The proper sections and materials are assigned to struxml objects in the mapping process performed in the tool.

 

 

Characteristics:

  • Export selected Tekla Structure analysis model to FEM-Design.
  • The .struxml file will include the defined material and profile mapping.
  • List of transferred data: geometry of the analytical model, mapped cross-section of linear members, mapped material, releases of linear members, rigid links, grids system.

 

⤷ Tekla StruXML Import

Tekla StruXML Import tool enables direct communication between FEM-Design and Tekla. The direct data transfer is based on the conversion of FEM-Design analysis model transfer into Tekla native objects. The proper sections and materials are assigned to Tekla native objects in the mapping process performed in the tool.

 

 

Characteristics:

  • Import FEM-Design model to create a new Tekla Structures model.
  • Update Tekla Structures model with changes made in FEM-Design model after the initial import.
  • One can import/update: selected element(s), group of elements (e.g. all beams, columns, etc.), all elements.
  • List of transferred data: geometry of FEM-Design analysis model, a mapped cross-section of linear members, the thickness of plane walls and plane plates, mapped material, analytical element ID of an object.
