How to survive with 10 000 load combinations

Design codes often specify a complex set of loading scenarios that must be considered in the verification of structures. This easily leads to thousands of possible load combinations. Calculating more than 500 combinations with an FE model is, however, often impractical or even impossible. The most problematic cases are usually those with arbitrary axle loads combined with other effects, such as varying groundwater pressures or combined external and internal pressures from wind and excavation conditions. A common solution is to simplify load combinations—but are there better and more systematic methods to solve this problem?
